A student and her parents pose for a pictureŷ will host its annual Parents' (Family) Weekend from Friday, Oct. 5 through Sunday, Oct. 7. The weekend features an opportunity for parents and families to celebrate, fellowship, as well as the chance to interact with Tuskegee faculty and administrators.

Interim Dean of Students Walter P. Cooper, Sr. and Judicial Officer Kimberly Ceaser are the event planners for Parents' Family Weekend. Ceaser explained that the weekend will feature a number of activities ideal for both students and their visiting family members.

“Parents’ and Family Weekend has been a long-standing tradition at Tuskegee,” she said. “It’s a time for our students — especially members of the freshman class — to invite their parents and family back to campus to see how they’re doing.”

Ceaser also emphasized that parents and families can expect a full slate of events that will keep them engaged and excited.

“We have such a beautiful campus, and this weekend provides the perfect opportunity for our students’ families to become better acquainted with the university,” she added. “They will have the chance to visit places on campus they may have missed during new student orientation — not to mention pick up some Tuskegee gear in the campus bookstore and meet with our faculty and staff.”

The weekend’s activities will begin with a meet-and-greet Friday evening, followed by a reception and dinner in Tompkins Hall Ballroom.

Saturday’s festivities will include a welcome program, followed by a presidential address to family members by Dr. Lily D. McNair. And for the university’s faithful Golden Tiger fans, attendees can continue the celebration in Columbus, Georgia, where the Tuskegee football team will take on Morehouse College Tigers during the Tuskegee-Morehouse Classic football game.

The annual Scholarship Convocation on Sunday will round out the weekend’s events. The program, scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Daniel “Chappie” James Arena, also will include the announcement of the Parents of the Year Award recipients.

“We invite our students and other friends of the university to nominate award-worthy parents or other family members,” Ceaser said. “It’s such a tremendous honor for parents and families to be recognized with this beautiful gesture.”

The deadline to submit nominations are being accepted up until Sept. 21. Nominees may be a parent (biological or adopted), grandparent or legal guardian of a currently enrolled student or graduate of ŷ. Nominees also should have provided significant financial or other resources to at least one student in support of educational needs while pursuing college study at Tuskegee. They should be actively involved in community services and/or community development-related projects that seek to improve the quality of life for others.

Online pre-registration for Parents’ and Family Weekend continues through Monday, Oct. 1. After then, the cost of the weekend will increase from $55 per person to $65 per person.
