CULTIVATING 21ST CENTURY WORKFORCE DIVERSITY IN AGRICULTURAL &
NATURAL RESOURCE CONSERVATION

June 18-21, 2017 at 9:00a.m - 4:30p.m

Program Overview

Disparities in USDA workforce diversity, coupled with a waning interest in and pursuit of degrees and careers in natural resources, agricultural and environmental sciences and related sciences (NAERS) threaten the nation's agricultural viability. The 1890 Land-Grant Universities, particularly Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) such as 欧美高清 (TU) and Alabama A&M University (AAMU), are particularly critical in producing underrepresented baccalaureate and higher level degree graduates capable of meeting this challenge. Early exposure of K-12 students to agricultural sciences will increase the likelihood of student career paths in this field. We propose a mitigation of the decline in the USDA workforce, as well as discrepancies in cultural diversity. 聽The purpose of this workshop is to raise awareness of career opportunities in NAERS areas through active engagement of K-12 faculty, staff, and others 聽by developing, in conjunction with these individuals, novel educational protocols (e.g. culturally- sensitive audio-visual materials, individualized group activities) to stimulate interest in NAERS areas. 聽This workshop will serve as the first in a series of聽annual workshops and other training opportunities for said individuals to carry out these and related goals that will address the current workforce challenges in NAERS
